The Kyoto Protocol (named after the place where the meeting took place in Japan); a global agreement about Climate Change was set up by the United Nations in 1997. This initiative was created to help reduce harmful polluting emissions and global warming. It contains goals for emission reductions that is legally binding for all the countries involved (37 industrialized countries and the European community ) in the accord.

The aim is to help prevent countries from causing global warming through preventable human activities. Other sources of Global Warming come from mother nature, however, damage of the climate caused by humans has more significant effects on the planet.

The developed countries of the world like Canada & the UK have made strong commitments to help reduce amounts of emissions and have also set out a time line in witch to do this by known as the target dates and set levels. Six greenhouse gases have been targeted to be reduced by five percent with in the next few years. Three of those gases are carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. If these countries are successful in tier goals, then it will definitely help reduce global warming.

Some countries have been allowed to raise emission levels, unlike most countries whom have agreed to reduce emissions. Some of these countries are Iceland, Norway, and Australia. There current numbers are much lower then the anticipated acceptable levels and even though they can increase levels they can only do so to a certain level. There are also countries that have told that they can maintain the levels of emissions that they already produce. Some of these countries are Russia, and New Zealand.

The goals of Kyoto is to decrease global warming and should be significantly noticed between the years 2008-2012. As we already know that this date is quickly approaching, it seems that this goal will be nearly impossibility to achieve for some countries like the United States.

Under the Kyoto protocol, a country can receive credit by helping other countries out. For example, if a developed country sponsors emissions reducing programs in other developing countries, then they receive credit for this. This method demonstrates their commitment to the reduction of global warming. When every developed country joins in the struggle to reduce global warming, the earth will finally start to clearly show the benefits of everybody help. After all we all live on this beautiful planet and we all need to do our part to maintain it for generations to come, so that they can enjoy it too.

Due to ongoing environmental concerns which not only affect our present but also our future, coupled with the economic factors such as gas prices and political plus military uncertainty in oil rich areas like-Middle East, Nigeria etc, we have been pushed to a position where we need to make a smart choice by fast and efficient development of new renewable and clean sources of energy supply and production.

Our dependence on fossil fuels has to decrease and we have to become energy independent. This is the only course of action that is open to humanity at large and different countries are waking up to different options. Energy experts, consultants and analysts keep warning us that oil sources are not going to last forever nor is our buying power, while we cannot sacrifice our highly mechanized, luxurious and largely electronic civilization, thus we need to make some smart moves fast.

This is where the importance of pursuing alternative forms of energy is underscored. Whether it be due to the unpredictability that energy dependence on other countries brings with it, or the fact that we are causing irreparable damage to the environment-we are responsible for turning this into a win-win situation. Even if there are many skeptics of the claims of the global warming lobby out there, who believe that its a natural cycle and not created by mankind, we can see that there are indeed many changes taking place in the environment and we should not do anything to worsen it.

Concepts of air, sound, water pollution are not mere bookish concepts, they are happening for real and we are causing it. The earth provides us with various resources but they are all finite and if we keep on misusing them like we are doing now, someday we will have to pay for it with catastrophic results. We have to be accountable for our actions and its only natural for us to be afraid of what our future might be like if we do not respect the laws of nature.

In this aspect, all the countries of the world have to stand together. While developed nations like United States, Japan, Germany and some other European nations are already devising policies, providing grants and implementing research solutions into practical programs for efficient and timely development of alternative energy sources; the developing nations such as China and India have just started waking up to the challenge.

These countries got industrialized fairly recently and they have been contributing to the pollution phenomena at a much greater rate, they need to take motivation from the developed nations and join hands in providing wings to their research and development faculties to for alternative energy sources development. In fact a partnership or even a commercial we-produce-the-solution-you-buy-and implement-them relationship between the two kinds of economies should not be construed as too far fetched.

In this regards, the role of many alternative energy sources becomes very important-how far they can be developed and their potential harnesses-whether it be biofuels extracted from sugarcane and soybeans or the refined hydroelectric technology, hydrogen fuel cells or the possibility of building more and safer atomic energy plants, solar energy photo voltaic cells being made more efficient or wind-power being harnesses even in non-windy areas-these all are our windows to a greener, cleaner, safer and more prosperous future.

The process know as the greenhouse effect earns its description from a comparison between the temperature of air inside a greenhouse compared to the air outside. Known to many as global warming, its is one of the most frightening man made phenomena of the 21st century. At the end of 2006, scientists confirm that the average temperature of the planet has shown an increase of up to 1 C every year for the last five. This increase had proved beneficial for just a few regions in the World especially those of higher latitude.

However, the negative impacts of the greenhouse effect on the World’s climate change are being observed already through the overall effect in constant annual temperature increases.

Overall the effects of global warming have proved to be disturbing, a prominent example is the increasing levels of acidity being detected in sea water due to increased evaporation levels. This could trigger off a long term reaction that could bring catastrophic effects on the marine food chain.

Changes to the polar ice packs and glaciers are occurring on an ongoing basis, and scientific evidence has proven that these areas are warming up at a much more rapid rate than the global average. The frightening statistic is temperatures in the far north have by between 5-7 degrees Celsius in the last 50 years. No need to say that if the greenhouse effect continues at this level then we can expect a catastrophe of global promotions, and sometime within the next twenty to fifty years.

Rainfall has decreased dramatically over the last decade, with drought conditions being felt in Western Australia and the deep south of America, where just a few years ago this situation was unheard of.

Shortages of drinking water has become a way of life for billions throughout the World, and with populations rising, this will soon reach epidemic proportions.
Water for agriculture is also in increasingly short supply due to the greenhouse effect, bringing with it shortage of the most basic food supplies.

There is no doubt that the greenhouse effect has changed our lives, and will affect the lives of our children and our grandchildren even more so. Awareness of the problem is in the increase and technological advances may go a long way to curtailing it in the future. Let us hop for our future that mankind will be able to halt if not reverse the damage being done to the World’s climate through the greenhouse effect.

The Alternative Energy sources sector is a hugely rewarding one, commercially as well as intellectually. However, a word of warning to those searching for jobs in this area. The beginning years are those which demand high loyalty and relatively low paycheck. After all this industry is not predominantly about making huge amounts of money and this is reflected in the jobs positions and remunerations balance scale.

No one is denying that money is important, just that making money is not the criteria for which one should decide on entering this sector. It is more an accomplishing and satisfying job for those who are motivated to help humanity, society, environment and through all this they feel a sense of accomplishment. It is also a high profile position which brings in good money after a certain point. It is a prestigious position which offers a lot of incentives in return for a lot of hard brain work.

Since the field of alternative energy is still developing, its obvious that they are in constant need of a work force at different positions. These include positions like-that of plant operators or mechanics, who keep the power plants up and running; developers and researchers-the high brain endowed engineers and scientists as well as entrepreneurs or companies’ contact people – who take the initiative to invest in this field. It is a blessing as well as a great leap of faith to work in an industry which touches all our lives so tremendously.

Moreover, this area has got new impetus since many governments throughout the world have started supporting it. Many new investors are also coming forward to support this new way of living our future, the way humanity can sustain its lifestyle as well as create a new benchmark for using earth’s resources. This has been encouraged by growing economic unpredictability (rising oil prices) as well as political and military uncertainty. This directly leads us to the point where all this enthusiasm is creating new job opportunities as well.

Looking at the US government: it is also doing its best in promoting the availability of new jobs in the alternative energy sector. This would entail a faster pace of research and development in the field of alternative energy sources, especially achieving greater use of homegrown, renewable fuels. Such as- making ethanol from plant fibers’ biomass. While plant fibers are right now discarded as waste materials, they can be our biggest resource for job creation, cost decrease, pollution control and energy development in immediate future.

These types of initiatives are supported by grants such as $150 million included in the President’s 2007 Federal Budget for helping with the development of biofuels derived from agricultural waste products such as wood chips, corn stalks, and switch grass. This also helps in next-generation research and development of battery technology for hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Being energy independent is the only way humanity can survive peacefully for a long time.

The Great Refrigerator Roundup is a program designed by the Ontario Power Authority to remove older, inefficient refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners from our electricity system. Most often, these older appliances are secondary units such as “the beer fridge” or “the over flow” found in garages or basements. They are usually plugged in but not used on a regular basses, and will typically use 2 to 3 times more energy than newer appliances do.

The Great Refrigerator Roundup program offers an opportunity for people to have older refrigerators and freezers picked at no cost to Ontario home owner (they also pick up window air conditioners and dehumidifiers). The Ontario Power Authority has also pledged to fully decommission the used appliances in an environmentally friendly manner. When they are finished recycling and reclaiming the materials, very little of the inefficient refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners will be sent to our landfills

Why would you want to participate in this great program?

Well there are several great reasons to participate, by allowing the Ontario Power Authority to remove your old refrigerator or freezers (free of charge!), first off you could save around $150 per year off of your electricity bill by eliminating a major electricity waste. You will also be helping the environment by reducing the amount of electricity that needs to be generated, your appliances will be decommissioned with environmentally responsible methods. It costs you nothing, you will be free of hassles as a professional comes to your house to remove your old fridge/freezer, window air conditioner. This will also help to ensure that old appliances like these are not resold and put back onto the market for others to use and continuing to wasting more of our valuable energy.

For more info on the Great Refrigerator Roundup program contact the Ontario Power Authority [1-877-797-9473] or visit their web site

How would you like to get off-grid… stop paying those staggering electricity bills… and say goodbye to the electric company – forever?

Now it’s POSSIBLE - using nothing but renewable energy, straight from Mother Nature:

It’s affordable…

It’s green…

It’s endless…

And you can recoup your investment in just a few months…

And this is only the start of it…

But…

The truth is, going green is hard for most folks…

That’s because a lot of information published by books and magazines is dead wrong… when it comes to slashing your utility bills or breaking free from the electric company.

The larger companies don’t want the little guy like you or me to end up the dependency on the energy, because they will make less money.

So that’s why, most people are struggling when it comes to piecing all the puzzle together… and make renewable energy work for them as too.

Going green on your own is simply too hard – if you’re only starting out.

That’s why I’ve put together what’s probably the ONLY tell-all guide about going off-grid – and even getting the electric company to pay you.

Now it’s up to you. And if your energy freedom meens anything to you – you’ll definitely enjoy Renewable Energy Secret!

The umbrella of alternative energy sources is huge and includes many resources: solar power, water, wind, biofuels etc. One of the most powerful yet underdeveloped and underutilized source is that of Geothermal Energy. It is a natural occurring energy source which is readily available just beneath our feet and is produced by the Earth waiting to be taken use of by our brilliant minds. We should be focusing a lot of our energies and aptitudes in harnessing its full potential.

The geothermal energy makes use of the tremendous temperatures at the Earth’s core which creates extreme pressures to be exerted on boiling water thus creating huge amounts of energy via high pressure volcanic hot steam. Moreover, we can use the superheated fluids in the form of magma which seep up to the surface as steam through vents in case of a volcanic eruption. If we are able to create our own super powerful containment chambers for this kind of magma or steam to vent out and then create special turbines to convert this energy into electricity and thus to light and heat, we would strike gold. Usually, the process of harnessing geothermal energy includes digging a well where there is a good source of magma or heated fluid and fitting a piping down the source so that the fluids can be forced out to produce the needed energy in the form of steam. The turbine will then be turned by this steam and generate the electricity.

There are some challenges to be overcome-the costly study and implementation of identifying the areas in which to set it up, the expense needed to build a vast and efficient geothermal power plant, and then all the research and development for developing highly efficient turbines and double checking the entire process to make sure it remains efficient and turns in appropriate amount of profit. There is after all no guarantee that a geothermal site will produce a large amount of steam enough for the power plant to be viable and give good return on investment. Finally, there are many environmentalists who caution about the harmful effects of magma and related materials once it is brought up on the surface of the earth.

In the ultimate analysis, however, the benefits of geothermal energy offset these challenges especially in the long run, especially if we are savvy enough to invest a lot of time and intelligence in carrying out copious amount of research and studies for exploration, viability analysis and final installation. It is one of the cleanest, most naturally available and powerful form of alternative energy source. Once careful study is done and the plant is set up, it will need minimal upgrade and would be profitable and useful in the long run. It would also lessen our dependence on fossil fuels and traditional power as well as on giant dams or probable unsafe atomic energy facilities. And most importantly, it is renewable and will be a giant leap forward for making in its quest for a green clean future.
