Due to ongoing environmental concerns which not only affect our present but also our future, coupled with the economic factors such as gas prices and political plus military uncertainty in oil rich areas like-Middle East, Nigeria etc, we have been pushed to a position where we need to make a smart choice by fast and efficient development of new renewable and clean sources of energy supply and production.

Our dependence on fossil fuels has to decrease and we have to become energy independent. This is the only course of action that is open to humanity at large and different countries are waking up to different options. Energy experts, consultants and analysts keep warning us that oil sources are not going to last forever nor is our buying power, while we cannot sacrifice our highly mechanized, luxurious and largely electronic civilization, thus we need to make some smart moves fast.

This is where the importance of pursuing alternative forms of energy is underscored. Whether it be due to the unpredictability that energy dependence on other countries brings with it, or the fact that we are causing irreparable damage to the environment-we are responsible for turning this into a win-win situation. Even if there are many skeptics of the claims of the global warming lobby out there, who believe that its a natural cycle and not created by mankind, we can see that there are indeed many changes taking place in the environment and we should not do anything to worsen it.

Concepts of air, sound, water pollution are not mere bookish concepts, they are happening for real and we are causing it. The earth provides us with various resources but they are all finite and if we keep on misusing them like we are doing now, someday we will have to pay for it with catastrophic results. We have to be accountable for our actions and its only natural for us to be afraid of what our future might be like if we do not respect the laws of nature.

In this aspect, all the countries of the world have to stand together. While developed nations like United States, Japan, Germany and some other European nations are already devising policies, providing grants and implementing research solutions into practical programs for efficient and timely development of alternative energy sources; the developing nations such as China and India have just started waking up to the challenge.

These countries got industrialized fairly recently and they have been contributing to the pollution phenomena at a much greater rate, they need to take motivation from the developed nations and join hands in providing wings to their research and development faculties to for alternative energy sources development. In fact a partnership or even a commercial we-produce-the-solution-you-buy-and implement-them relationship between the two kinds of economies should not be construed as too far fetched.

In this regards, the role of many alternative energy sources becomes very important-how far they can be developed and their potential harnesses-whether it be biofuels extracted from sugarcane and soybeans or the refined hydroelectric technology, hydrogen fuel cells or the possibility of building more and safer atomic energy plants, solar energy photo voltaic cells being made more efficient or wind-power being harnesses even in non-windy areas-these all are our windows to a greener, cleaner, safer and more prosperous future.

The Alternative Energy sources sector is a hugely rewarding one, commercially as well as intellectually. However, a word of warning to those searching for jobs in this area. The beginning years are those which demand high loyalty and relatively low paycheck. After all this industry is not predominantly about making huge amounts of money and this is reflected in the jobs positions and remunerations balance scale.

No one is denying that money is important, just that making money is not the criteria for which one should decide on entering this sector. It is more an accomplishing and satisfying job for those who are motivated to help humanity, society, environment and through all this they feel a sense of accomplishment. It is also a high profile position which brings in good money after a certain point. It is a prestigious position which offers a lot of incentives in return for a lot of hard brain work.

Since the field of alternative energy is still developing, its obvious that they are in constant need of a work force at different positions. These include positions like-that of plant operators or mechanics, who keep the power plants up and running; developers and researchers-the high brain endowed engineers and scientists as well as entrepreneurs or companies’ contact people – who take the initiative to invest in this field. It is a blessing as well as a great leap of faith to work in an industry which touches all our lives so tremendously.

Moreover, this area has got new impetus since many governments throughout the world have started supporting it. Many new investors are also coming forward to support this new way of living our future, the way humanity can sustain its lifestyle as well as create a new benchmark for using earth’s resources. This has been encouraged by growing economic unpredictability (rising oil prices) as well as political and military uncertainty. This directly leads us to the point where all this enthusiasm is creating new job opportunities as well.

Looking at the US government: it is also doing its best in promoting the availability of new jobs in the alternative energy sector. This would entail a faster pace of research and development in the field of alternative energy sources, especially achieving greater use of homegrown, renewable fuels. Such as- making ethanol from plant fibers’ biomass. While plant fibers are right now discarded as waste materials, they can be our biggest resource for job creation, cost decrease, pollution control and energy development in immediate future.

These types of initiatives are supported by grants such as $150 million included in the President’s 2007 Federal Budget for helping with the development of biofuels derived from agricultural waste products such as wood chips, corn stalks, and switch grass. This also helps in next-generation research and development of battery technology for hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Being energy independent is the only way humanity can survive peacefully for a long time.

The umbrella of alternative energy sources is huge and includes many resources: solar power, water, wind, biofuels etc. One of the most powerful yet underdeveloped and underutilized source is that of Geothermal Energy. It is a natural occurring energy source which is readily available just beneath our feet and is produced by the Earth waiting to be taken use of by our brilliant minds. We should be focusing a lot of our energies and aptitudes in harnessing its full potential.

The geothermal energy makes use of the tremendous temperatures at the Earth’s core which creates extreme pressures to be exerted on boiling water thus creating huge amounts of energy via high pressure volcanic hot steam. Moreover, we can use the superheated fluids in the form of magma which seep up to the surface as steam through vents in case of a volcanic eruption. If we are able to create our own super powerful containment chambers for this kind of magma or steam to vent out and then create special turbines to convert this energy into electricity and thus to light and heat, we would strike gold. Usually, the process of harnessing geothermal energy includes digging a well where there is a good source of magma or heated fluid and fitting a piping down the source so that the fluids can be forced out to produce the needed energy in the form of steam. The turbine will then be turned by this steam and generate the electricity.

There are some challenges to be overcome-the costly study and implementation of identifying the areas in which to set it up, the expense needed to build a vast and efficient geothermal power plant, and then all the research and development for developing highly efficient turbines and double checking the entire process to make sure it remains efficient and turns in appropriate amount of profit. There is after all no guarantee that a geothermal site will produce a large amount of steam enough for the power plant to be viable and give good return on investment. Finally, there are many environmentalists who caution about the harmful effects of magma and related materials once it is brought up on the surface of the earth.

In the ultimate analysis, however, the benefits of geothermal energy offset these challenges especially in the long run, especially if we are savvy enough to invest a lot of time and intelligence in carrying out copious amount of research and studies for exploration, viability analysis and final installation. It is one of the cleanest, most naturally available and powerful form of alternative energy source. Once careful study is done and the plant is set up, it will need minimal upgrade and would be profitable and useful in the long run. It would also lessen our dependence on fossil fuels and traditional power as well as on giant dams or probable unsafe atomic energy facilities. And most importantly, it is renewable and will be a giant leap forward for making in its quest for a green clean future.

Oceans are not only home to a large variety of species of our ecosystem, they are also huge resource for alternative energy. This process of alternative energy is also known as OTEC or “Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion”. The credit for coming up with this brilliant idea of using Ocean Thermal Energy as an alternative energy source goes to the French Scientist Jack D’Arsonval way back in 1881.

However, because of various challenges involved, it is still not a very popular or widely method of alternative energy. This is mainly because of the large costs involved with its implementation. The costs are high due to the intensive utilization of various processes used to harness and use this resource.

The fact is that this huge cost deters the widespread funding and exploration of this particular source even though it is a very clean and pollution free and huge resource with phenomenal potential. Thus the sole electricity-producing OTEC plant on this blue planet right now is the NEL of Hawaii. This resource needs much more research and development to ward off its current drawback of potentially hurting local ecosystems and make it cleaner and more efficient.

However, let us have a look at different kinds of OTEC-

1. Closed Cycle OTEC uses the process of boiling an intermediate fluid (a liquid with a relatively easily attainable boiling point like propane) along with the warmer water from the outside ocean which is pumped by the OTEC plant and creation of a mass of vapor which creates force on the piston that powers the engine thus generating power for our appliances. The vapor can be cooled down by releasing outside ocean water into the engine and the process can start again. This process can also be utilized for treating chemicals.

2. Open Cycle OTEC operates without the fluid used in closed cycle OTEC and here it is actually the ocean waters that drives the engine’s piston. First a vacuum is created which turns the warmer ocean water is pumped in into a thin mist which is then forced into a small area to exert pressure on the turbine and electricity is generated. Again here the vapor is cooled down which takes the salt out of sea water and makes it fit for humans to drink.

3. Hybrid Cycle OTEC is an ambitious theory which postulates the way to most efficiently use the sea’s thermal energy. This can theoretically be done by either using a closed loop in order to produce electrical power which can be further used to make the no-pressure situation required for open cycling; or it can be done by a combination of more than one cycles to create twice the amount of drinkable water.

However, even in the present form, the functional OTEC plants of both cycling kinds can be used for bringing in outside water to balance the temperature of the system for use in home cooling systems or for mari-culture and aquatic enthusiast projects such as fish farming in the enclosed area.

Thus OTEC is a versatile alternative energy source which can be used for a variety of uses if only we have the spirit of initiative to take up this challenge.

Light is an energy source that important to all of us. In fact we live in a world that when the sun sets we automatically expect the lights to be only a click away. Sometimes we take this for granted and then really miss it when we do not have it. We make use of lighting sources in various ways. There are different wattage bulbs, various types as well as a wide range of colors to choose from. Lighting sources can be from lamps, overhead lights, porch lights or even flash lights.

There are also many ways to power our lighting sources, but Solar Power is the most environmental energy source. The soft glow from most solar power lights are calm and relaxing, they are not too bright and to the human eyes they are very eye catching. Investing in solar powered lighting is a smart economical investment and practical choice that is often very affordable.

Some ideas for solar lighting include using it inside of your sheds, garages, gazebos, or even the inside your home. Solar powered lighting installation is relatively pretty easy and maintenance is often minimal. First you need to install a solar panel that can receive the most sunlight in your area (in North America it is usually in a south facing direction). Then you feed a wire from the panel into the lighting hardware. You should buy a solar panel that is adequate enough for the size of room you wish to provide light for. There are many local vendors and online web sites that you can buy Solar Lights from.

Once your indoor lighting has been properly installed you will be able to use it both at night and during day., However during the day you do not usually need much light. At night there should be enough energy stored up from the solar power to last the whole night if you need it. This source of indoor lighting is becoming very popular with back yard building and barns on farms because there is less wiring required.

There are different types of outdoor lights that use solar power; flood lights, garden lighting, pond lights, post lights, spot lights, security lights, and signs. The best part is to lighting to your back yard is really easy to do and there are many places to buy and various lights to choose from varying in design and shape. Everyone likes a nice eye catching back yard and now you can show it off at night as well without spending lots of money on power.

The soft glow from most solar power lights are calm and relaxing, they are not too bright and to the human eyes they are very eye catching. Investing in solar powered lighting is a smart economical investment and practical choice that is often very affordable. So why not check out Solar Lights for your self?

Solar energy, by virtue of its being readily available almost throughout the world and being absolutely pollution free, is becoming an increasingly sought after alternative source of energy. It is now being increasingly used for powered electricity generation through the use of solar panels. While it still has to catch on a huge way, many signs are increasingly pointing towards an increasing awareness and readiness to use these in homes-even if just for heating water in most of the cases.

For this purpose, a solar panel is used which comprises of a large array of back squares-these squares are known as Photovoltaic cells. These cells focus on gathering sunlight on a concentrated point so that it becomes very powerful and does the mandated job. In case the job is to heat water, the water is held in the panels and is heated through the concentrated action of sunlight and gets pumped into the pipes to the bathroom.

Many people believe that these cells won’t be able to work in stormy or cloudy days. In fact with increasing research and development, not only are these cells becoming more efficient at absorbing enough light on either sunny or cloudy days, but they are also becoming generally more efficient, more productive, stronger and less expensive. Many options are also being explored and brought into practice. Such as- A company, Uni-Solar has developed solar collection arrays for home use that have an advanced system which lets them store enough energy through the sunny days so that this energy can be used on other days also.

Another option in this regard goes by the name of PV System, already used in some small towns and suburban communities. This system works by connecting to the closest electrical fixture and transferring any excess sun-created power being stored at a certain house. This means more energy for the community, lowering of individual expenses, less pollution, less pressure on the grid and less stress on the nonrenewable energy producing facilities.

It is because of these various benefits and a kind of win-win situation being created for all that many big corporations are jumping in the fray to use solar power as an efficient renewable energy fuel. Such as- Google building a huge solar radiation collection farm on the top of its corporate seat. Meanwhile, smart nations like powers in Asia and the West have got ahead in the race by providing grants to researchers or by allowing tax rebates to groups and people who take the initiative to use renewable energy sources for producing what they need for consumption. Because more and more technological advancements are made and this area becomes highly profitable as well as an ethical necessity, we can look forward to living in a much greener, cleaner world.

Deep cycle batteries are designed for longer power supply durations than start up batteries. Start up batteries, like the one in your car, are designed to give an initial surge of energy and must be sustained by a power charge. Deep cycle batteries, however, are designed to supply a long-term charge.

They are probably best known for their application with solar panels. Deep cycle batteries are cleaner, more efficient, and last longer than regular batteries. Because of this, they are finding their way into applications beyond solar energy.

Deep cycle batteries reduce dependence on fossil fuel and leave a much smaller carbon footprint than standard batteries. They can be used to power small homes and recreational vehicles. Because of their slow disbursement of energy, they are more durable than standard batteries. A longer-life battery can save you money in the long run.

As battery technology advances, deep cycle batteries are getting cheaper and cheaper, making them a more viable substitute for gasoline power generators. So, they offer two benefits; they make a renewable resource, like solar panels, more practical by efficiently storing energy, and they reduce the need for carbon-based fossil fuels.

These sorts of alternative energy sources are what the green movement is about. Reducing our dependence on fossil fuels is a main goal of going green, but so is saving money.

Being green is all about conservation, whether it be conservation of energy through alternative fuel and power sources, or conservation of trees by reducing paper consumption.

When you reduce consumption, you naturally save money, because you buy less of that material you are conserving. The development of technologies, such as deep cycle batteries and solar panels, will not only reduce your carbon footprint, but it will reduce the footprint of your checkbook as well.

Combining energy saving green technology with conservation, reuse, and recycling is a very effective progression to going green. As you apply this green thinking to your everyday life, you will experience change.

Going green is a habitual exercise. At some point, your friends, neighbors and relatives are going to ask you about the compost pile in your backyard, the solar panels on your roof, and your deep cycle battery generator.

At first, some of them might not be too turned on by the idea of going green, but as you tell them how these technologies, along with conservation, have changed your life and saved you money, they’ll listen with a more open mind.

This is how the green movement grows and keeps going through better and better technology, like deep cycle batteries.

Some of the more heavily discussed topics of early 2010 include obesity, green infrastructure, clean water, and more. In particular, the addition and/or substitution of green spaces has been quite controversial as of late. Senior resident of Urban Land Institute Ed T. McMahon states “Green space adds value to property.” Not only would these areas of conservation drive economic trends upward, but they also improve the overall health of the community surrounding. For example, substituting things like golf courses for conservation areas would essentially increase surrounding property value while diminishing overpriced maintenance fees. The same holds true for airports and other large acre-eating developments.

Some of these areas are already abandoned or unkempt. For instance, park and recreational areas that were once highly visited have become urban wastelands. In an article from the Salt Lake Tribute, Lindsay Whitehurst discusses how an area that was capped with tennis courts to replace an old reservoir had been empty for some time now. She further explains how the University of Utah received a loan to fill the old reservoir and turn the land into a conservation area.

Much larger metropolitan areas are also playing their role in promoting sustainability by implementing many Green Spaces within the city. In Meg Muckenhoupt’s new book Boston’s Gardens & Green Spaces, she discusses different green space within the city of Boston. With very low cost maintenance fees and little liability, these areas are perfect for protecting our wildlife and the environment. They also attract further tourism; which would in turn generate revenue from ticket/tour sales.

This aligns with the implications of “economic viability” and long term sustainability, posing the question, “Would the substitution of golf courses and airports in the short term lead to an abrupt economic downfall? It’s true that this type of architecture provides undoubtedly high revenue. On the contrary, they both come with ridiculously high expenses and maintenance. Incorporating various elements of green architecture implies things like green roofing, which could in turn drive down electrical/gas costs dramatically.

Larger organizations are already taking a step in the right direction in Haiti. Machine behind the CGI (Clinton Global Initiative) Doug Band has been working closely with organizations like AFH (Architecture for Humanity) to discuss potential means of green restoration. Combined with the additional efforts of many large collaborative units like the USGBC (United States Green Building Council), AFH hopes to shed some light on a terrible situation.

Recent findings have driven people like McMahon and fellow conservationists to investigate further into upgrading and expanding green infrastructure efforts. As earth day 2010 slowly approaches, it’s important that we as individuals follow and support these ventures. It’s equally important that we adapt greener disciplines to support both our planet and our economy.
