Environmental Damage Caused by Tornadoes
Recent tornadoes in the South and Midwest have left behind thousands of acres of mangled, shredded debris, building materials, trees, cars, and refrigerators. They also left behind some potentially serious environmental hazards. Many residents are faced with challenging cleanups, states are relaxing some environmental protection regulations in the affected areas.
States such as Missouri, for example, are temporarily lifting some restrictions on what can be discarded in landfills. The state also is allowing residents in affected areas to burn vegetative matter on their own property, but only with the permission of the local fire department. ESA Space Observations; a must for Battling Climate Change
The European Commissioner for Climate Action, during a hearing held earlier in Belgium this week reported that observations from space are an essential tool for monitoring, fighting and adapting to climate change. The ESA’s Climate Change Initiative makes full use of Europe’s Earth observation space assets, including the GMES Sentinel missions. Through this new strategy, long-term datasets on key indicators of climate change will be systematically generated and preserved. This provides Europe with a powerful tool to monitor the state of the climate system and to help predict the effects that a changing climate may bring. …
