Even Babies Can Live Green

A new baby is one of life’s greatest blessings, and you want the best of everything for your new child.  That should include his or her environment.

There are ways to ensure that your baby begins life in a safe, natural, toxin-reduced environment.  For instance, you might want to ask relatives and friends, who will be eager to buy things for the newborn, to respect certain criteria such as purchasing only 100% cotton organic items of clothing and sleep materials for your baby.

Many types of sleepers, blankets and crib bedding are made with wrinkle-free, water resilient, or permanent press fabrics.  These fabrics are not safe.  Many of these items are sprayed and saturated with formaldehyde.  Formaldehyde goes incognito under other names like Formalin, Morbicid acid, or Methylene oxide.  You want to be careful of these chemicals being induced into anything that touches your baby.

Exposure to any extreme chemical is unhealthy for a baby and can lead to sensitivities that can develop into a lifetime of allergies and asthmatic reactions.  The best way to guard against this is to create as green a living space for your infant as possible.

In regard to fabrics that will come in contact with your child, this means sticking as much as possible to 100% cotton, organic fabric.  A baby’s skin is very sensitive and toxins are easily introduced through the skin layer into a child’s system.  No parent wants to endanger their child by having chemical-laden materials introduced into their child’s system by the very clothing and sleep materials meant to coddle and comfort a newborn.

You can do a lot of research about creating a safe, green living space for your child, whether it is in providing safe clothes and swaddling, or paints and elements of décor throughout the home.  Carpeting, for example, can be a source for some of the same toxic chemicals that we previously mentioned in this article.

Look for chemical free products dealing in every aspect of your baby’s life.  From the clothing your infant wears to the car seat that protects them when riding, you can find less hazardous products than the ones standardly sold in the chain stores.

Some of these items might be a bit more costly than their more common kin, but when it comes to your newborn’s health, my guess is that you rather spend a little more to go green than to have chemicals like formaldehyde introduced to your child’s body.
