The process know as the greenhouse effect earns its description from a comparison between the temperature of air inside a greenhouse compared to the air outside. Known to many as global warming, its is one of the most frightening man made phenomena of the 21st century. At the end of 2006, scientists confirm that the average temperature of the planet has shown an increase of up to 1 C every year for the last five. This increase had proved beneficial for just a few regions in the World especially those of higher latitude.

However, the negative impacts of the greenhouse effect on the World’s climate change are being observed already through the overall effect in constant annual temperature increases.

Overall the effects of global warming have proved to be disturbing, a prominent example is the increasing levels of acidity being detected in sea water due to increased evaporation levels. This could trigger off a long term reaction that could bring catastrophic effects on the marine food chain.

Changes to the polar ice packs and glaciers are occurring on an ongoing basis, and scientific evidence has proven that these areas are warming up at a much more rapid rate than the global average. The frightening statistic is temperatures in the far north have by between 5-7 degrees Celsius in the last 50 years. No need to say that if the greenhouse effect continues at this level then we can expect a catastrophe of global promotions, and sometime within the next twenty to fifty years.

Rainfall has decreased dramatically over the last decade, with drought conditions being felt in Western Australia and the deep south of America, where just a few years ago this situation was unheard of.

Shortages of drinking water has become a way of life for billions throughout the World, and with populations rising, this will soon reach epidemic proportions.
Water for agriculture is also in increasingly short supply due to the greenhouse effect, bringing with it shortage of the most basic food supplies.

There is no doubt that the greenhouse effect has changed our lives, and will affect the lives of our children and our grandchildren even more so. Awareness of the problem is in the increase and technological advances may go a long way to curtailing it in the future. Let us hop for our future that mankind will be able to halt if not reverse the damage being done to the World’s climate through the greenhouse effect.

It seems that nowadays everything is about Green Living. It’s all over the media, it is in our grocery stores, featured on many products and it even seems like even local schools have started green living related fundraisers.

With all the facts and tatistics environmentalists are advertising, like that if every person recycled their newspapers weekly, we could save 36 million trees per year (in the US alone), converting your living standards to green ways can seem very overwhelming at first but are more easy to adapt to then most people think.
It’s not as hard as it seems, all you need to do is make small, nearly-painless changes. Start buying fluorescent light bulbs, wait until your dishwasher is really full before you run it, open your curtains to let the warn sun shine in during cold times and close them during warm ones. Small things like these really do make big differences.

Among other things, one of the most popular polluters we have is our use of automobiles. Nowadays, there’s a large movement to start walking, biking and using mass transit whenever possible. Keeping the excess car pollutants out of the air is, pretty important and easy to do, we just need to make some life style changes.
Experts feel that one of the biggest reasons for not making the conversion to green living is a lack of general understanding. They feel that people today simply don’t realize “how painless it is” to pick up green household cleaners, or to buy exclusively local and organic produce.

You do not need to add solar panels to your home to help the environment; just start with the small things, like not always using air conditioning when you really don’t need it. Instead, wear the appropriate attire, turn on more energy efficient fans or even hang out in your basement during times when it is hot.
Chose where to live, based on efficiency, public transit, and convenience like close to a bus stop, close to local small business. If you must drive a car then choose a Hybrid over a typical gas guzzler. All it takes is one step at a time to completely convert to green living. Becoming more environmentally active and aware is about being a part of a team, a community, and our world now. It’s about keeping our kids happy and clean for a good, long while. What do we have to lose but pollutants?

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that you can’t see, smell or taste. Because of these invisible and odorless traits, it is often referred to as a silent killer. Carbon Monoxide gasses are produced from burning fuels such as wood, propane, oil, natural gas, kerosene, diesel, and coal when they do not burn properly. Now that does not mean that these are unsafe fuel sources, however like most things of this nature, proper precautions should be taken. All fuel burning equipment needs an adequate supply of fresh air in order to function properly, along with proper ventilation to carry the poisonous exhaust gases outside of the home.

Carbon Monoxide, the Silent Killer

If you happen to notice stale or relatively stuffy air, excessive moisture on your windows and walls or black soot build up around heating appliances or vents then you may have a CO problem in your home. All above are signs are indicators that Carbon Monoxide may be present and you or your family may experience flu like symptoms due to some degree of exposure to the CO gasses.

When a person gets exposed to CO gasses they may experience flu like symptoms such as headaches, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, drowsiness, burning eyes, confusion and unconsciousness. If somebody in your home experiences these symptoms at home but then the symptoms diminish when they leave the home then there may be Carbon Monoxide present. If you think there may be CO present in your home then you should leave immediately and seek medical attention or simply dial 911 (you can also consult your fuel provider for more information). In some severe cases, prolonged exposure to Carbon Monoxide poisoning can result in death so you should treat this problem seriously.

Proper installation, inspection and regular maintenance of any fuel burning equipment is probably the best defense against any harmful releases of CO gases into your home. However, having good CO detectors is a great way to protect yourself from this silent killer, But do keep in mind that having a CO detector should not eliminate the need for regular inspections of your equipment by a licensed heating, ventilation and air conditioning contractor.

Just like we do for smoke detectors, remember to change the batteries in your CO detectors when you change the clocks for day light savings. If your CO detector plugs into a wall outlet then double check to see if it is still operating with the test button and check to see if it has back up batteries.

So in summary, to protect yourself from any

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning , just install CO detectors and make sure they work properly with good batteries. If you do not have one yet you can get one for less then $50 such as the one listed below, so go out now and protect your home … better yet protect your family
